PARABURDOO

Paraburdoo is a 40-year-old purpose built mining town, located 24Km North of the tropic of Capricorn. Paraburdoo is known for its beautiful scenery, wildlife diversity and its history. Some of the significant events that have happened in Paraburdoo consist of UFO sightings, discovery of 200 year old bones and royal visits. Many famous people visit Paraburdoo every year for concerts, TV show and movie filming and the beautiful wildlife and nature that surrounds the town. Paraburdoo has a population of 1,060.

Paraburdoo was named after a nearby station which was built by the McGuire family. The name comes from two aboriginals words (Piru and Pardu) meaning meat and feather which applied to the large number of cockatoos which inhabit the area.

SHORT TIMELINE OF HISTORY IN PARABURDOO

1970 - Hamersley Iron established a mine in Paraburdoo and provided accommodation for $14.oo a week for the residents in Paraburdoo of worked in the mine. The Engineering team lived in the exploration camp until the 1,400 bed exploration Camp was built. Two or three trains were loaded out of Paraburdoo in 1972.

1971 - The Paraburdoo airport opened

1972 - Paraburdoo and Tom Price became linked to the Australian telephone network.

1973 - Paraburdoo Mine operation started.

HISTORY

Paraburdoo was established for mine worked by Hamersley iron in 1970 and came into operation in 1973. The iron ore is crushed and screened at Paraburdoo before being railed to Tom price and onto the port at Dampier where it is blended with ore from Tom Price. The journey from Paraburdoo to Mount Tom Price is difficult and six engines are used to pull the train up a continuously adverse 300 metre gradient. A typical train stretched over 2km and has 200 cars carrying a total weight of 25,000 tones.
