NORTH HAMPTON

North Hampton is a town, which is located 52 kilometres North of Geraldton, in the mid-west region of Western Australia.

North Hampton is made up of 28,495 (2013) people.

HISTORY

North Hampton was originally named the Mines. In 1864 there was a petition for a new name, the town was then named after colonies governor named John Hampton.

Lead Ore was first found in the town by James Perry Walcott. By 1863, 980 tonnes of led ore and 230 tonnes of cooper ore were exported from the district. Later n the 1900's the town was left under water by flooding from torrential rainfall.

The North Hampton State then opened in 1954 and operated for around 30 years leaving a large amount of tailings stockpiled. Locals removed the waste to use in buildings and other construction works.

North Hampton is one of the oldest towns in Western Australia, having been declared a townsite in 1864. There are many heritage buildings in the town which mostly consist of churches.
