GERALDTON

Geraldton is the second place that I visited on my journey home from boarding school. Geraldton is located 424km North of Perth. In 2011 Geraldton had a population of 35,749.

HISTORY

The history of Geraldton started around 40,000 years ago when many different aboriginal tribes lived in the area.

Campion Bay was the first noted name for Geraldton in 1840. It was named by the Royal Navy Hydrographic surveyor JL strokes after a colonial schooner. n 1839, George Grey became the first recorded European to explore the region. He explored the region on foot and travelled from Shark Bay to Fremantle throughout his journey.

Swan River Colony was struggling to find land for new settlers as fertile land in the avon valley was already taken up by other colonies and settlers. In 1846, two exploration parties were then sent out as a result to loss of land in the Avon Valley. They travelled to the North of Perth. Augustus Gregory returned with good pastoral land and coal deposits in the Mid - West coastal region.
